For more than a decade we’ve been working with growers to develop new plant varieties to help address some of their greatest unmet needs – crops resistant to abiotic stresses. Abiotic stresses are caused by non-living environmental factors such as heat, drought, nutrient availability and salinity. These stresses can have an even greater impact on yield than biotic stresses such as insects, weeds and disease, yet most commercial technologies focus on biotic stresses.

Great Promise for Yield Stability And Sustainability.

Drought Tolerant Soybeans

Working with our partner Bioceres in Argentina through our Verdeca joint venture, we’re in late-stage development of our proprietary HB4 Drought Tolerant Soybeans. These proprietary varieties hold great promise for bringing better yield stability to agriculture in areas that experience chronic water stress problems. The combined effort through Verdeca aims to create significant value for soybean growers by increasing the sustainability and productivity of one of the world’s most important protein crops in the face of global climate challenges.

Verdeca completed the US Food and Drug Administration’s approval of HB4 soybeans in August 2017, and Argentinian regulatory approval in October 2016, and is working with regulatory agencies in key world areas to receive import approval.

Short-Term Benefits With Long-Term Impact.

Nitrogen Use Efficiency

Nitrogen fertilizer is one of the key drivers producing high yields in modern agriculture, and its use has grown substantially over the past 40 years. Plants, however, are only able to use about half of the nitrogen fertilizer applied. The remainder moves through the soil and enters ground and surface water systems, or volatilizes into the air as a greenhouse gas 300 times more potent than carbon dioxide.

Arcadia’s Nitrogen Use Efficiency (NUE) trait enables plants to use nitrogen fertilizer more efficiently, allowing growers to increase yields while significantly reducing fertilizer use. Arcadia and our partners have incorporated the NUE trait into major global crops including rice, wheat, soybeans, cotton, sugar beets, and sugarcane. Field trials conducted by Arcadia and our partners have demonstrated the efficacy of this trait in multiple growing regions over the past decade.

Improving Agronomic Crop Performance In Unstable or Arid Regions.

Salinity Tolerance

Of the world’s 568 million acres of irrigated land, 111 million acres, or about 20 percent, are estimated to be impacted by salinity. The global cost of lost crop yield to salt-induced land degradation is estimated to be $27.3 billion per year according to the United Nations Natural Resources Forum. Salinity stress occurs globally where irrigation is prevalent, where ground water supplies are salinized due to seawater intrusion and where soils are salinized due to mineral deposits. Such areas are common in North America, India, China, Australia and other regions of Asia.

Our Salinity Tolerance (ST) trait enables plants to produce normal yields under highly saline conditions. In addition to their improved agronomic performance, these ST plants bind excess salt from soil and help restore salinized land over time. Arcadia and our partners have applied the trait to a wide range of crops, including cotton, wheat, rice, corn, soybeans, sugarcane and vegetables.

Ensuring Yield Thought Water Stress Protection.

Water Use Efficiency

Less than one percent of the world’s water supply is available and safe for human consumption. Although fresh water is a renewable resource, it is limited especially in many parts of the world where agriculture is essential to food security. Even when water is available, changes in climate, weather-related droughts and floods can cause variations in rainfall patterns and environmental conditions that affect water supply and crop yields.

Arcadia’s Water Use Efficiency (WUE) trait has been demonstrated to improve crop yields under conditions of episodic water stress and to help crops recover from severe drought conditions. Arcadia and our partners have incorporated the WUE trait into major global crops including wheat, rice, corn, cotton, sugarcane and tree crops.

Arcadia’s WUE trait enables growers to increase yields and improve farming efficiencies while reducing agriculture’s demand for fresh water in irrigated as well as arid regions.
